It is the result of a collaborative research project by Telenet, SBS Belgium and Vlerick Business School, whose ambition was to develop a guide to the current state of addressable advertising technology on TV, with a special focus on the Belgian market. This paper aims to map out the TV advertising ecosystem, define threats and opportunities, and provide solutions focused on the role that data can play in TV advertising.

The white paper:

  • Outlines the benefits of addressable TV advertising to all stakeholders including the consumer, brands, media agencies, broadcasters and distributors
  • Overviews how the technology works and the current state of technology development
  • Demonstrates how addressable advertising impacts the current TV advertising ecosystem
  • Addresses the multiple challenges associated with bringing addressable TV to market, namely: data, privacy and ethics, measurement, cost, scale, standardisation, and inertia.

SBS Belgium was the first broadcaster in Belgium to enable its inventory for addressable advertising on TV. Telenet provides its experience as a Pay TV operator to the research. The white paper was treated as an academic project, ensuring suitable objectivity, as part of a research partnership between Telenet and Vlerick Business School that also funds a full-time PhD student to work there on this topic.

The authors of the paper are: Leen De Schaepdrijver, Prof Dr Philippe Baecke, Prof Dr Koen Tackx, Jeroen Coeymans, Lode Lauwers and Bert Van Driessche.

The paper begins with the rationale for the research and the interest in addressable TV advertising. It states that, “Local media companies, and by extension the entire local media ecosystem, are being pushed aside by international tech giants such as Google and Facebook. For various reasons, more and more companies are choosing to advertise through international digital companies. So, the creation and distribution of ads is shifting to players outside the local ecosystem, which results in value disappearing from this ecosystem.

“Belgium, and especially its northern region Flanders, has a unique media landscape with a heavy focus on local quality content. To ensure strong, engaging content, media companies rely on revenue that comes from advertising. In order to shift some of this value back to the local ecosystem, Telenet and Vlerick joined forces in a strategic research partnership.”

Why the 5G era relies on a new breed of CDN https://www.v-net.tv/2020/11/25/why-the-5g-era-relies-on-a-new-breed-of-cdn/ Wed, 25 Nov 2020 08:00:07 +0000 https://www.v-net.tv/?p=16646 A new breed of CDN is needed for telcos to fully monetize 5G and to support the enhanced services and applications that separate the 5G era from the 4G world. Without this, 5G is in danger of stalling. Streaming video exemplifies the dangers and the opportunities ahead. Without a 5G-ready CDN it will disappoint, but with one it becomes the killer app for the early 5G years.

This Vision Paper discusses:

• The growth path for 5G
• Why 5G requires a network transformation that goes beyond the radio access network
• The value of virtualization in 5G content delivery
• How the CDN edge is becoming more localized
• Why video is the killer app for the early 5G era
• How telcos can monetize their own 5G CDN

Delivering the Entertainment Platform of the Future https://www.v-net.tv/2019/11/29/delivering-the-entertainment-platform-of-the-future/ Fri, 29 Nov 2019 13:48:35 +0000 https://www.v-net.tv/?p=15050 This case study outlines the development of Liberty Global’s new Horizon 4 platform, which encompasses a 4K set-top box and voice-controlled remote, combined with the innovative Liberty Global ‘GO’ mobile app. Horizon 4 has been rolled out across seven European markets and has received the highest net promoter scores to date for a product launched by Liberty Global.

This project demonstrates how one of the world’s leading converged video, broadband and communications companies delivered on the promise of ‘any content, any device, anywhere, anytime’ using a ‘one platform’ strategy. Previously, Liberty Global built one-off projects for each country and brand that were difficult and costly to scale. The one-platform strategy creates a scalable, multi-country and multi-brand video product that can be rolled out across local operating companies.

Liberty Global turned to longstanding partner EPAM for its integrated consulting, design and engineering capabilities to build this next-generation entertainment platform. You can read how the Horizon 4 project introduced a cloud-native microservices architecture and a way for Liberty Global and external design agencies to deliver fully interoperable assets for all of the video platforms.

This project led to a shift from Waterfall to SAFe Agile development processes. Horizon 4 has also resulted in a data lake that utilises AI and machine learning to better inform decisions around product design, customer satisfaction and potential new revenue sources.

This project has been shortlisted in the ‘Advancing the TV User Experience’ category at the Videonet Connected TV Awards. You can see details about that here.

Re-imagining content distribution workflow for the video industry https://www.v-net.tv/2018/10/30/re-imagining-content-distribution-workflow-for-the-video-industry/ Tue, 30 Oct 2018 20:03:53 +0000 http://www.v-net.tv/?p=12589 This report demonstrates how the content workflow and rights management inefficiencies associated with multiplatform TV can be eliminated, helping to accelerate rights negotiations and content preparation and so get content in front of consumers faster, at lower cost. It outlines a transformative solution, using a common cloud platform and PaaS model, that creates a frictionless, end-to-end marketplace connecting content providers and video service operators.

You can read how content providers can gain unprecedented, real-time visibility into content usage and therefore rights compliance, encouraging trust and opening the way to more flexible business models and new distribution partnerships. The report explains how it is possible to encode and encrypt content only once for multiple distribution end-points, eliminating the process duplication and associated costs that currently burden the industry.

Known security vulnerabilities, caused today by the decryption and re-encryption of content during video processing (like transcoding) are removed with the new workflow model. Automated management of rights and rules enforcement removes manual burdens from both content providers and video service operators. The report demonstrates how these benefits are achieved.

Readers will see that we have reached a watershed moment as the complexities introduced by multiplatform TV are dramatically reduced again. The new technologies, workflow architecture and vendor collaborations that make this possible are outlined here. Experts from Swisscom, TCC Uruguay, Verimatrix, AWS Elemental, Rethink Technology Research, tvstrategies, Mediamorph, Minerva Networks and others give their views on the potential impact.

The future is direct-to-consumer, for every content owner https://www.v-net.tv/2018/09/06/the-future-is-direct-to-consumer-for-every-content-owner/ Thu, 06 Sep 2018 14:54:37 +0000 http://www.v-net.tv/?p=12281 Streaming is mainstream behaviour, consumers are stacking SVOD services and there is a growing appetite for a more a la carte television buying model. A growing list of pioneers, from HBO, Hayu and WWE to multiple sports federations, are proving the benefits of direct-to-consumer (D2C) distribution, including the ability to better monetize super-fans. The rapid growth of D2C is inevitable; it is an unfolding mega-trend. Smaller and mid-sized content owners could be among the biggest beneficiaries, and the barriers to their entry have now been broken down by technology innovation. This Vision Paper explains why D2C is for everyone and why it is now the right time for content owners to make the move.

The World’s First Major Android N Deployment of Android TV Operator Tier https://www.v-net.tv/2018/08/31/the-worlds-first-major-android-n-deployment-of-android-tv-operator-tier/ Fri, 31 Aug 2018 10:24:08 +0000 http://www.v-net.tv/?p=12163 Sweden’s largest multichannel TV provider, Com Hem Group, operates both IPTV and cable networks and, after acquiring the terrestrial broadcaster Boxer in 2016, a DVB-T network. The company has been a leader in user interfaces since 2013 when it brought TiVo to Sweden. In 2017 the company developed a unified viewing experience across broadcast, catch-up, OTT, TVOD and SVOD services. When the company considered how to realize this next-gen video project, it evaluated the potential pros and cons of traditional turnkey development, the RDK open-source software, and the increasingly popular Android TV Operator Tier.

Com Hem selected Android TV and engaged with 3 Screen Solutions (3SS) as overall project coordinator. Technicolor supplied an Android TV STB, and Verimatrix provided the Pay TV security. This was a major project undertaking with unique challenges, being the world’s first large scale Android N (Nougat) deployment based on Android TV Operator Tier. The content security aspect is crucial given that Android TV is an open environment. Special care must be taken to separate the Pay TV security processing and data from the other apps in this open environment. This is a very different challenge compared to the closed environments of traditional STBs.

This case study explores how the content for all services across all Com Hem’s three networks and screens is secured end-to-end by the Verimatrix VCAS Ultra revenue security solution.
