Eutelsat has chosen V-Nova PERSEUS video compression for the contribution of visually lossless 4K feeds of the UEFA Euro Championship 2016. The contribution feeds will be used by the Italian broadcaster RAI for its UHD channel on the Tivùsat platform. The contribution signal will be full-frame 3840 x 2160 at 50fps. V-Nova is providing its P.Link 4K encoders and decoders, which use the PERSEUS codec. The UHD contribution feed will be enabled at “practical bitrates†alongside multiple HD feeds, at the lowest possible latency, Eutelsat says.
This is the second V-Nova deployment announcement in a week. PERSEUS is also being used for an Indian OTT video service delivered over 2G as well as 3G mobile networks (story here).
Eutelsat will provide the contribution link from the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) at the football tournament and will manage operations from its Rambouille teleport near Paris. The RAI UHD Channel will show the live football from the quarter-final stages onwards, meaning seven games are covered by this arrangement.
According to Cristiano Benzi, Director Special Projects Italy for Eutelsat, “We are excited to be part of RAI’s exceptional mobilisation on Ultra HD for the tournament. Live 4K broadcast requires a high-quality communication infrastructure, which plays to our core strengths. By working with V-Nova, we will be able to add pristine 4K/UHD feeds alongside the all-important HD feeds.â€
V-Nova says the deployment confirms the readiness of PERSEUS powered P.Link 4K products for high-quality live UHD contribution. Guido Meardi, V-Nova CEO and Co-Founder, adds: “It also demonstrates that 4K-UHD contribution is commercially viable today alongside existing services.â€
