Netflix is introducing its “add a home” feature in Latin America which aims to clamp down on password sharing. In Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, each Netflix account (regardless of plan) will include one home where Netflix is accessible on all devices, and an additional fee must be paid to add extra homes.
The additional fee per month per home for each country is: Argentina (219 Pesos), Dominican Republic ($2.99), Honduras ($2.99), El Salvador ($2.99), Guatemala ($2.99). Subscribers on the Basic plan can add one extra home, while subscribers on the Standard plan and subscribers on the Premium plan can add up to two and three extra, respectively. According to the company, the change in policy comes as a response to “widespread account sharing between households [which] undermines [its] long term ability to invest in and improve [its] service.”
The company has clarified that the change in policy will not effect subscribers being able to watch Netflix on their laptop, tablet or mobile while they are outside the home. Netflix has also introduced a ‘manage homes’ feature which will allow subscribers to go into their account settings and control where their account is being used, giving them the ability to remove homes at any time.
Netflix said: “We value our members, and recognize that they have many entertainment choices. So we’re working hard to make great TV shows and films, and to be as thoughtful as possible about how we charge for use across multiple homes. We will not make changes in other countries until we better understand what’s easiest for our members.”
