Operators can become more deeply embedded in our lives thanks to the Smart Media Device

Broadband and TV service providers have an opportunity to embed themselves more deeply into our lives with a new category of device that has evolved from the set-top box: the Smart Media Device. In this interview, Charles Cheevers, CTO for CPE at CommScope, outlines the functions of the SMD, which can include smart assistant functionality with voice UI that also harnesses the television set for visual interaction, and which can host a service provider voice/skills environment alongside Alexa, Google or others. Cheevers argues that as operator CPE is located at the heart of the home, the SMD creates new service opportunities like assisted living, utility management and other smart home concepts.
